Hotel Finca Valverde’s (250 meters/822 feet southeast of the Banco Nacional,22 rooms in 14 cabañas and 8 standard rooms, restaurant). Just on the outskirts of Santa Elena, where the road inclines toward the Monteverde Cloud Forest, is this working coffee plantation that has sprouted a very pleasant hotel and bungalows in the forest below their finca (farm). A metal bridge suspended over a rushing stream – a free mini-Sky Walk – leads to the comfortable standard rooms housed in a large wooden building with wrap-around balcony and a good view. The only disadvantage to these quarters is the lack of a bathroom towel rack. The individual cabañas, scattered along the wooded hillside, are more luxurious, incorporating a large bathroom, individual veranda with garden chairs, main bedroom and upstairs sleeping loft with queen-size beds. The walls are all natural wood. Several trails fan out past the cabins into the coffee fields that climb the steep surrounding hills. The farm has been in Victor Valverde’s family for years and his sons now work with him. His daughter- in-law manages the hotel’s candle-lit restaurant, Don Miguel, where starched napery and curtains hand-painted with images of Costa Rican birds and flowers add to the romantic atmosphere. Excellent local cooking and very generous servings, but reservations are requested for all three meals. Private enough to make it feel like the forest, but just a twominute walk to the town and its community attractions.
